Animation Mentor AN01 - Week 01

For a bit more about my experience, I wrote a brief article on my blog The Awesome Power of Junk and Stuff.

This is my very first assignment in my very first class at Animation Mentor. An online school focused on 3D Character Animation. The first class is titled “Animation Basics”. The course is intended for people who have never animated before. Even though I’ve been animating in the 3D motion design space for almost 30 years, I’ve never really done much character animation, so I wanted to go back to square one to rebuild my skills from the ground up.

This first assignment Using specific prompts, sketch out poses and then use the provided "Stewart" rig to create each pose. LOL... I think I was only supposed to do ONE pose, but I did 7.

It was an incredibly fun project and I built out a board on Pinterest to serve as a reference for my sketches.

Even though the Stewart rig is considered “basic”, it is really well built and this assignment was a wonderful introduction to the controls. This video shows my work…

The second part of the assignment was to open a prebuilt scene file and use two keyframes to animate a little car going from left to right using different curves to control the motion. Again my goal is to “start over” so I spent time really examining the curve behavior in Maya.
